Musically UN-talented
If I could have a soundtrack to reflect my moods, complement my seasons of life and reveal a deeper sense of who I am – whoa! Wouldn’t that be the coolest thing ever?
Music has always been very important to me. Like it was rooted in my soul, running deep through my veins. But I should probably stop and clarify that I am actually,
musically UN-talented!
As passionate as music makes me, I fear I may be tone-deaf! Growing up, I didn’t understand why music meant so much to me if I couldn’t sing, play an instrument or have any gifts remotely correlating to music!
Overtime, I have come to learn that music is a way to express and process how I feel. It goes deeper than anything I can comprehend. And it is one very special way that God speaks to me!
God gently nudged me with the passage, Psalm 46:10,
“Be still and know that I am God.”
And this truth, has given me moments of miraculous communing with God. Moments I am still in awe of just thinking about! His beautiful voice has never been a thunderous boom shaking the ground I stand on, but each and every time I hear His voice, my whole body trembles and my heart is moved!
I am a Mom. A farm wife. Fitness instructor. And ministry enthusiast, so being physically still is nearly impossible. Mixed with my all-over-the-place personality, it’s kind of a nightmare some days! But, there are other ways He has chosen to utter His excellence to me when life doesn’t stand still.
God revealed His melodious voice by speaking to me through song!
He has shown me that my mouth doesn’t need to SPEAK, but my ears need to LISTEN. I don’t need a beautiful voice to serenade others, but one to glorify Him. There is something about music expressing His Word that truly makes it come alive! (Hebrews 4:12)
It may sound absolutely crazy, but when life gets loud, I turn the music up and sing louder. When the lies of the Enemy are deafening, I crank the volume and worship even more!
Music is one way I demolish strongholds! Music helps me take captive every thought. Music helps calm my mind, still my spirit and be obedient to Christ’s calling. I can’t tell you how many times I have been praying over a situation or a struggle and God ever so timely affirms His guiding hand through a song.
“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
I still may not be able to rock a musical instrument or sing a perfect tune. But, when I do sing it’s a pleasing sound to His ears! Because I may not have been given the gift of being musically talented in voice or instrument, but I’ve been graciously blessed to be a chosen instrument to sing His praise, share His Word and do so at the top of my lungs!
“Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name…”
Is there is a part of your life that is very important and drives you to be passionate, but you can’t exactly explain why or know how to implement that? Here is the simple answer: PRAY!
Ask God to reveal how to use this special gift as His chosen instrument! And then Don’t Doubt! (James 1:6) There is no part of our perfect design that is a mistake. We are all unique! Listen to His voice, however He speaks to you! Embrace your differences and magnify your talents for His glory! And most importantly, don’t forget to sing at the top of your lungs!
“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”
*CHALLENGE: When you turn on the radio, Alexa or Spotify, what do you listen to? Does music set the tone of your mood? What would the soundtrack to your life sound like?
If music influences you in such a way, be sure to be filling your ears with uplifting and encouraging music that will reflect your true heart of worship!
Heavenly Father, thank You for music! What a beautiful way to express some of most intimate parts of our soul! Thank you for creating each one of us differently! And yet still desiring to use each of us as Your chosen instruments! May we be obedient to Your calling! And may we all sing, at the top of our lungs to praise You! In Your Holy Name, Amen.
