What’s Your New Word?

A question that I’ve been challenged by as we wrap up this year has been, ‘What is my new word for the upcoming year?’

For instance, what is word would I choose for myself to focus and strive for?  Some examples may be, focus, discipline, surrender, etc.

As I began praying over the right word to meditate on, I couldn’t settle on just one. After a few days of wrestling with finding the right word, this thought clearly surfaced.

Why does it need to be just one word? Why not The Word?

I began browsing passages to piece together my thought process. Which has led me to this new challenege.  Are you ready?

Instead of focusing on just one word for the New Year, why not focus on The Word

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Hebrews 4:12

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

James 1:22

“Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Matthew 4:4

“Sanctify them in the truth, you word is truth.”

John 17:17

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

Romans 10:17

“He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

Luke 11:28

“But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart.”?

Romans 10:8a

“Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life.”

Philippians 2:14-16a

Don’t let this be daunting, but daring!  There are so many ways to tackle this challenge:

  • Read the Bible in a Year: There are many apps available to keep track (need ideas to know what’s available, send me a message!)
  • Choose a Memory Verse: Either each week or month (if you have kids, do this with them, trust me!)
  • Verse of the Day Reminders: Available on your phone / email / etc.
  • Accountability:  Find a friend or group to read with you and encourage you along the way!  Join together as you read, study and grow to understand God’s Word.  This is crucial to sticking with your decision!  You got this!!
  • Prayer: I read once that ‘When we open our Bible’s, God opens our hearts.’  So why not prepare in prayer as you dive into this wonderful new year!

Don’t dwell on the negatives that 2020 may have brought, but strive with optimism for 2021!

Have a safe and Happy New Year!!
